A Bausch & Lomb Rochester two-pan analytical balance from 1938, in its original glazed mahogany case with the sliding front and both side doors intact. The beam is aluminum, the knife edges and bearings are agate — still sharp, still clean, still capable of the tenth-milligram sensitivity the maker promised.
The rider, its wire fork, and the associated 1-to-500 milligram bench weights are all present in the original velvet-lined block. A small brass level and its plumb screws bring the whole instrument true; the beam-arrest mechanism operates crisply.
This is the balance that sat in every serious American undergraduate chemistry lab for forty years. This one carries a University of Michigan inventory tag from 1939.
